Cowes Primary School is located 140 km south east of Melbourne in the township of Cowes on Phillip Island in the Gippsland Region of the Department of Education. The school is seen as a vital part of the local community.

The school enrolment in 2009 is 390. The school population is relatively fluid with children moving into and out of the school through the year although overall numbers of children continues to increase gradually. Approximately one third of the children who attend travel in by bus from outlying areas.
The school provides an effective educational program which contributes to the development of each of our student's physical, social, emotional, creative and intellectual potential aiming to help prepare children to actively contribute as members of a changing society. There is a focus on the building of self-esteem, confidence and pride in themselves, their school and the local community.
Parents or guardians are encouraged to share in a partnership with a focus on developing positive educational outcomes for their children. They are welcomed in classrooms, have the opportunity to train to assist in programs throughout the school and participate in school activities.
Emphasis is placed on the learning of English and Maths. Class sizes are kept to a minimum.
There is a strong commitment to the development of information technology, sport and physical education, performing arts and visual arts. The school is recognised as a leader in these areas. Facilities and equipment are outstanding with a 25m heated pool, gymnasium, synthetic grass playing field, football oval, music room, e-learning centre and library.
